Electrical & Power
Electrical & Power Systems Survey
Field checklist for documenting service equipment, distribution, and emergency power during an existing-condition survey or construction observation. Photograph nameplates and clearances in the same note.
Service Gear
- Record utility voltage, service ampacity, interrupting rating, and the main disconnect tag.
- Note metering arrangement, grounding electrode conductor, and bonding at the service.
- Measure working clearance in front of the gear and record depth, width, and headroom obstructions.
- Photograph posted available fault current. Do not calculate it in the field from memory.
Transformers
- Record kVA, primary and secondary voltage, impedance, and temperature rise from the nameplate.
- Note dry-type versus liquid-filled, and any oil leak, unusual noise, or blocked ventilation.
- Verify equipment grounding and the bonding jumper.
- Record clearance to walls, ceilings, and adjacent gear. Note storage inside the working space.
Branch Circuit Panels
- Log panel name, voltage, phases, bus ampacity, and whether the panel is main breaker or main lugs only.
- Count spare breakers and empty spaces separately.
- Compare the directory to a sample of breaker positions. Note blanks, doubles, and taped breakers.
- Record neutral and equipment-ground condition, including double-lugged terminals.
Generators & Automatic Transfer Switches
- Record generator kW or kVA, voltage, fuel, and the day tank or gas piping at the unit.
- Log ATS manufacturer, ampere rating, poles, and whether the transition is open or closed.
- Identify normal and emergency sources on the switch. Note the exerciser setting and any annunciator alarm.
- Where an essential system is labeled, separate life safety, critical, and equipment branches in the notes.
Facility Distribution Checks
- Data centers: record UPS, PDU, and dual-cord loads. Note which source each cord lands on.
- ASRS warehouses: trace crane or shuttle feeds, busway tap boxes, and aisle disconnects.
- Healthcare: confirm the essential system branches are identified at the transfer equipment and at the panels.
- Commercial buildings: record mechanical equipment feeds, lighting panels, and spare capacity at the main board.
